Shenice Caughman

How do you spell your name, "She-nice," was the response she gave. Who is she? Her name is Shenice Caughman, pronounced sh-neice, from Newberry, South Carolina. She grew up in a close knit family and her bestfriends are her mom and sister, family means everything to her.

In addition to family, happiness and peace of mind are also very important keys of success in her life. "If you're not happy, you're miserable." Peace of mind may not be something that people realize is important but for Shenice it is a big part of her world. "If I don't have peace of mind I don't have anything. I am a terrible person and thats not good for anyone."

When Shenice graduates she, like most, wants to travel the world but her favorite place is New Orleans because she has never been to a place where there is so much love. A place where you can get "great food, great drinks and a good time." In addition to traveling the world she aspires to become a sideline reporter for ESPN.
Her major is journalism and she is currently in her last year at South Carolina State University even after paying out of pocket for most of her undergraduate years. Shenice loves chicken, the color pink and she is never afraid of getting lost. Why? Shenice says "I think there is beauty in getting lost, because you will always find your way."

Justin Hill

Is a 23 year old broadcasting major from Winnsboro, South Carolina. He likes piña coladas and getting caught in the rain...kidding! He actually enjoys horror movies and loves the fall and the winter time. When you first meet Justin you think he is like a nice, quiet reserved person and sometimes looks can be deceiving, but not for him.

Parties aren't really his thing, he hates summer and his area of comfort is behind the camera. When asked about his dream job, Justin stated that it is to work for a news station as the camera man or helping out with the behind the scenes activity with TMZ, "I like David Mills, and I would like to do something like he did as well." David Mills was a writer and producer for television, you may have seen his name in the credits of the shows The Wire, NYPD Blue and Homicide.

Justin attends South Carolina State University and is currently in his senior year. He chose SC State because of his cousin who is a very successful nurse and Alumni of the institution. "I look up to all of the people who graduated and made something of themselves," was Justin's response when asked about his role model after he stated that he doesn't really have one.

In the spring of 2018 Justin became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated, below you'll see a picture of him in his probate attire. He joined because he wanted to be a part of something bigger than himself. Although this is Justin's last year in college, he believes that degrees are just pieces of paper, but "it is what you do with it," that makes all the difference. Today, there is a site that over 1
million people use, famous and not alike to share their whereabouts, how they are felling, what they may want to eat for dinner or try cooking tomorrow, their opinions on political matters or natural disasters or whatever they are feeling.

The site known as Twitter, was created by Jack Dorsey in 2006 and inspired by his want to become a dispatcher. His words from the 60 minutes interview were that the dispatchers would "always talk about where they are going, what they are doing and how they feel. With Twitter it goes to the World."

Twitter has become an outlet for people to express themselves on any topic to any degree. 300 million people send over 1 billion tweets every day. Twitter is so popular that the President of the United States feels the need to use it not sometimes, but very often.

Although I disagree with his continuous use of Twitter because I deem it unprofessional especially in the context that he uses it in, I feel that it gives the nation a chance to see who they have put in charge, how he feels and his impact on everyone else and how they feel about it almost as though he is having a conversation with the world and through this site everyone gets to chime in. take a look at these tweets and maybe you will feel the same.Trump and Twitter, Twitter Cry

Three people I follow on Twitter are Joel Olsteen because he always sends inspirational tweets that may occasionally make it to my snapchat, Kanye West because he is entertaining and controversial and my dad because he doesn't have that many followers and he needs all the help he can get.

I believe Twitter is very powerful and the conversations that the world has tells a lot about us as a whole and the relationship that we have with each other that some don't know exists. A lot of that power has been used for bad but a lot of it has been used for good as well and for America, that is a step in the right direction.

Linkedin is a site used to connect colleagues, entrepreneurs and business men and women alike. Everyone who is looking for a job, looking for someone who is looking for a job, or even looking for people who can help them with their current business use this site to easily connect with each other.

Linkedin is basically like social media in a professional setting which is very important in today's time because of the fact that people give an image of themselves based on what they post on social media and it can be looked at in any manner, but Linkedin gives people who are more professional and possibly conservative a chance to join in on the fun and take care of business at the same time.

As a Senior Commuications major at South Carolina State University I would like for my Linkedin account to convey just that. I want people to look at my site and think wow she's not only pretty and professional, but smart, adaptable, a great leader and her future is promising. I want her on my team!

Thomas E. Miller. The First President of SCSU

When I think about Thomas E. Miller being the very first president of South Carolina State University and what was then Colored Normal, Industrial, Agricultural, and Mechanical College of South Carolina I think wow, he was white? Little did I know...

Thomas E. Miller was born in 1849 in Ferrebeeville, South Carolina. Historians say that his mother was a fair skinned mulatto and his father was a rich, young white man who's parents disagreed with their relationship and forced them to put the child up for adoption. Miller was adopted by 2 former slaves Richard and Mary Ferrebee Miller, thus his last name.  

Prior to becoming the president of this institution, Miller was a lawyer, a state legislature and a U.S. Congressmen who during his tenure defended the right for black men to not only obtain suffrage but to continue to participate in the entire political system. 

As a president he was involved in the building and fertility of the school, the teaching of the students when for the first 3 decades what is now South Carolina State University was merely a primary and secondary school for training. The school did not offer a bachelors degree until 1925. 

Miller was not completely in charge of all affairs having to do with the students and the school itself. He had to seek permission from a board of trustees full of white men who controlled the curriculum and the courses, books that are ordered, teacher salaries and all other important matters pertaining to the now University. This may have made it hard for him to move in favor of the students with their struggles in mind, because of this he chose to resign but the board persuaded him to stay for the students. 

Later another incident happened where Miller admitted to asking voters not to vote for a known racist who opposed the education of black people and after he was elected ordered the resignation of Miller for "pernicious political activity". Miller did not deny, and thus ended his 15-year tenure as president. 

Overall, Thomas E. Miller had much more to him than what even today, meets the eye. He went beyond what was expected of him as a fair-skinned man, not only verbally but with his actions. Some could argue that he is the epitome of what a president or a leader should be, a man led by the people, for the people and his people just so happened to be black and in need of an education...he helped them with that. 

He died on April 8, 1938. At his request, the following was placed on his gravestone: "Not having loved the white less, but having felt the Negro needed me more", related to his work for civil rights and his decision to identify as African American rather than white.
